Advanced Laboratory Science

Syllabus

Advanced Laboratory Science gives the learner the opportunity to explore more complex laboratory procedures encountered in the environmental, medical, biotech, or forensic laboratory to include PCR, Spectophotometry and filtration as it relates to environmental microbiological and chemical analysis. The laboratory experience will also include laboratory solution preparation and advanced math techniques used to analyze data.

 

Beginning Laboratory Science

Syllabus

Beginning Laboratory Science introduces the learner to beginning laboratory concepts and procedures. Emphasis will be placed on general laboratory safety, basic laboratory equipment utilization, and calibration techniques. An introduction to scientific inquiry will be addressed. Proper techniques in documentation as it relates to quality control in verification of a quality system will be introduced. Concepts in data analysis will be reviewed as it relates to creation of a laboratory notebook.

 

Environmental Laboratory Science

Syllabus

The course will provide the learner with basic knowledge of the field of environmental science. The learner will develop an understanding as to the importance of creating a sustainable environment by utilizing testing methodologies to explore issues of food, water, energy, and air quality. The course will look at environmental systems and policies that help to regulate environmental health.

 

Field Hydrology

Syllabus

This course will provide general information on the properties of water and how the activities that occur in the environment can affect its quality and quantity through the study of surface and ground water compartments. It will include an overview of the hydrological cycle. It will also explore the relationship of water quality regulation and the principles behind performing water chemistries and microbiology techniques to ensure a safe water supply through watershed management.

Food Laboratory Science

Syllabus

To provide the student with an introduction to the field of food science. This course will take a look at how food is processed by using basic biochemical aspects of food production and how HACCP is used as an assurance of food quality through testing and regulatory means. This course includes a laboratory component that includes chemical and microbiological testing methodologies that are used to produce products and ensure that it is produced safely

General Biology

Syllabus

This course is an introduction to the general concepts and principles of biology with emphasis on cell structure and function, genetics, evolution, and taxonomical relationships. Consideration is also given to diversity among the various kingdoms.

General Chemistry

Syllabus

This class will cover the fundamentals of chemistry. Topics include the metric system, problem-solving, periodic relationships, chemical reactions, chemical equilibrium, properties of water: acids, bases, salts, and gas laws

Prep. Chemistry

Syllabus

This course introduces basic principles of chemistry including the properties of matter, atomic structure, and the classification of chemical reactions.  Students learn to characterize solutions, acids, and bases, and how to differentiate between elements and compounds.
