           Actual Student Examples

Here are some excellent examples of student email rebuttals. Each one is unique and several are in formats that students made up themselves but  all still meet the strict criteria for a successful email rebuttal. Students should review all of these prior to their own submissions in order to avoid disappointing email rebuttal rejections. Note that the most current examples are posted at the top.

Good luck!!!!

Mr. Bessette

Example #10 (Posted 9-12-2008):

I am really pleased that this student decided to post this email. His rebuttal is
based on an exception to the rule. His research is thorough and the argument is
first rate. This was my response to the student:

Dear Mr. XXXXXX:

Your email rebuttal is excellent. It has been well researched and the argument is quite compelling. Though I am not your instructor, I will recommend that you be credited for all points available for this question PLUS 2 points of extra credit. In my 16 years of hosting email rebuttals, I have only awarded extra credit twice before so you should be proud!!!

Every consider law school?  You think like a lawyer…. Good luck in your class,

Example #9 (Posted 9-11-2008):

This is an excellent example of an email rebuttal showing a logical and well constructed
argument. Its one of the best I've seen in my teaching career! This student should
        consider law school!!!! :)

Example #8 (Posted 4-20-06):

This is another excellent email rebuttal to the OWI exam with inclusion of two different resources. The student included thoughtful remarks along with a thorough discussion that earned not only the points lost but also a bonus point! This is the kind of critical thinking and logical discussion that will come in handy as a police office (or as a lawyer???).

Example #7:

This rebuttal includes an interesting discussion of statutory references and earned a point for thinking outside of the box!

Example #6:

This is an excellent email rebuttal with inclusion of both statutory and text remarks along with a thorough discussion that hit the nail on the head!

Example #5:

This student used the resolution model learned in class to present his email rebuttal. VERY impressive!!!

Example #4:

Note that this email rebuttal is well written and includes text cites! Great job.

Example #3:

Note how long this rebuttal is and that it includes outside sources to support his argument. It is quite the "legal" argument

Example #2:

Excellent rebuttal.  This is one of the best I have seen.  It is well argued and cites text book passages.

Example #1:

This student recovered points for both 1 and 3 and received another explanation for #2, which might have been written to explain more
thoroughly when Miranda might be given under such circumstances...
